European Otter (lutra lutra) (C)
Despite increasing in numbers otters remain very shy of humans and are difficult to see in the wild as they are mainly nocturnal.
The best chance of seeing and photographing wild otters is in the north of Scotland and on the scottish islands. Here the otters frequent the coast and are much more diurnal in their habits than their southern counterparts.
Many people call these northern animals 'sea otters' but this is incorrect as the Sea Otter is a completely different race and is not found in this country.
