European Otter (lutra lutra) (C)

The otter has made an incredible comeback in recent years.
In the 1970's it was the otter hunters who first brought the decline in numbers to the attention of the scientific community.
It was soon discovered that toxins from pesticides were accumulating in their systems. Numbers dropped alarmingly but with the banning of many chemical agents and given total protection the otter is back.
