Red Squirrel (sciurus vulgaris)
A Red Squirrel pauses momentarily as it searches for food.
The Red Squirrel is another native species in serious decline in Britain.
Population pockets exist such as this colony at Formby in Lancashire. There has always been a good population here but that is also under threat as many have now died from 'squirrel pox', a virus which is carried by the Grey Squirrel but which is fatal to Reds.
